Dubai Auto Parts City FZ

The setting up of a zone for auto parts, called Dubai Auto Parts City (DAPC), aiming to boost the re-exports of auto parts from Dubai.

As per rough estimates, Dubai currently re-exports Dh300 to Dh400 worth of spare parts annually.

Overall investments in the new 'Dubai Auto Parts City' in Al Aweer could total Dh1 billion, according to senior sources. The first phase alone, work on which would start in six months, would entail investment of around Dh400 million.

The project, with the active support of Dubai Customs, is expected to be completed in 2004, by which time the tenants will start moving in. Khatib & Alami has been appointed as project consultants. The project has been split into three phases.

The funding will be pulled in from the auto parts businesses wishing to have a presence in the zone. Tenants will have to pay Dh65 per square foot or plus.

The Dubai Government has provided 12 million square feet of land. It will charge 0.40 fils a square foot as rent from the tenants for the first 15 years.

Apart from spare parts, businesses with interests in tyres, auto batteries, and accessories are also eligible to take part.

Apart from auto traders and Dubai Customs, banks, clearing and forwarding agencies, and transport companies will have bases at the facility.

Dubai's trade in automotive parts is conservatively valued at Dh3.5-5 billion annually. Around 50-60 per cent ends up as re-exports.

The newly formed Auto Parts Merchants Group has embarked on a membership drive. It hopes to rope in about 150 members within the next few weeks.

A 11-member committee headed by C.K. Majid as chairman and Surinder Singh Khandari as vice-chairman has been constituted.


Dubai Biotech FZ

Dubai Biotech FZ Logo Announced in February 2005, the Dubai Biotechnology and Research Park (Dubiotech) is a science and business park dedicated to the biotech industry, set within a free zone infrastructure.

DuBiotech has two main areas of interest. The first is the Foundation for Research & Innovation (FRI), which will be the main arm focusing on government-funded R&D. The FRI will initially focus on medical research and genetics, plant biotechnology encompassing food and agricultural biotech, environmental biotech and equine-related biotechnology. Other areas include drug discovery, stem cell research, infectious diseases and forensic research

The second arm of Dubiotech aims to set up a biotechnology industry cluster with the appropriate infrastructure, facilities and services for incubators, R&D labs, biotech-related educational institutions, suppliers, biotech-related manufacturing companies and organisations from other sectors in the industry.

DuBiotech is advised by an independent steering committee on scientific, business and ethical matters. In cooperation with local and international organisations it seeks to develop comprehensive regulations for the biotech cluster.

Dubiotech is in talks with universities, both in Dubai and around the world, regarding affiliation status and offering courses and incubating university “spin-outs”, or start-ups.

Dubiotech has an AED 1billion fund for seed projects. Funding will be based on due diligence and evaluation of business plans.

Dubai Outsource Zone is the first ‘free zone’ in the world dedicated to outsourcing. It is a member of Dubai Holding and an initiative of Dubai’s Internet City, the global state-of-the-art ICT hub within Dubai that houses more than 700 of the world’s ICT companies including the ‘giants’ such as Microsoft, Oracle, HP, IBM, Dell, Siemens, Canon, Logica, EDS, Sony Ericsson, Sun Microsystems, SAP and Cisco.

Dubai Outsource Zone is the perfect base for both captive and third-party outsourcing operations to provide mid and high-end services in areas such as finance, accounting, IT, payroll processing, engineering, R&D and design. It also serves as a centre for offshore disaster recovery facilities for call centres. The Zone caters to offshoring requirements from Europe, the US and the region.

DOZ’s custom-made facilities, including next-generation telecom infrastructure, office space in intelligent buildings and facilities management, enable outsourcing companies to set up efficient operations. The package of telecom services include reliable and redundant high-bandwidth connectivity, IP Telephony, Automatic Call Distribution (ACD), Interactive Voice Response (IVR) and Predictive Dialing systems, satellite communication services as well as technical and infrastructure support. These facilities form part of a plug-and-play infrastructure which helps offshore service providers start operations quickly with minimal upfront investment.


Dubai Silicon Oasis

The Dubai Silicon Oasis represents Dubai's first attempt to get into the core of the multi - layered global IT industry.

The main target markets are the silicon valley in the US, France, UK & Germany. So far, six companies have signed and plan to establish IC design & design support centers at DSO's Microelectronics Innovation Centre (MIC) facility.

The DSO's Microelectronics Innovation centre and its services will be available for customers on December' 2004.There is also an effort to create a DSO training academy.


Dubai Studio City FZ

Announced in February 2005, Dubai Studio City seeks to offer a complete technical and community infrastructure catering to the film, TV and music production industries.

To be located within Dubailand, Dubai Studio City will build a cluster of production companies, support service providers offering production and post-production facilities, animation studios and services like dubbing, makeup, costume designing, stage designing and building, casting, telnet agencies as well as telecine and lab facilities.

Dubai Studio City will feature pre-built studios, sound stages, workshops, backlots and stage areas, a Broadcast Centre housing offices and post-production studios, and Business Centre for freelancers. The cluster will also house film and television schools and academies, location management services, entertainment and retail spaces, as well as hotels and residential facilities to accommodate crews and casts. The infrastructure for the first phase of the project will be completed by the first quarter of 2006.

Dubai Studio City will provide a single window for applying for production permits and visas. A fast-track immigration process will enable crews to get visas quickly. This service will allow companies to recruit talent easily. Besides, flexible labour laws ensure that the industry’s needs for part-time and temporary requirements are met.


Dubai Textile Village FZ

The UAE textile industry with export of Dh. 12 billion is growing rapidly & is poised to become the largest trading sector after the oil industry in the UAE.

The demand for textiles has led to the development of Dhs. 220 million. Dubai Textile City, which will be a free zone, thus this will increase the trading and make the textile industry a flourishing business.

The Textile City will be located at Awir and is scheduled to be completed by October 2005.


eHosting Data Fort FZ

eHosting DataFort (EHDF), a fully-owned subsidiary of the Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone and a member of Dubai Holding, provides managed hosting and IT security services. EHDF offers services that fortify companies’ IT infrastructure and enhance their productivity. Its services include co-location, managed hosting, strategic outsourcing, data centre consultancy and build, internal security audit, security penetration testing, disaster recovery and business continuity.

EHDF is the only service provider in the region that offers a full range of Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity solutions. It has a state-of-the-art Security Operations Centre (SOC) which provides Managed Security Services to companies across the region. EHDF also offers Security Consultancy Services and Security Training courses for both the technology and management staff of organisations. Heavy Eqpt. & Trucks FZ

In a view to boosting the re-exports of trucks and heavy equipment.

The new zone will have all facilities needed for the promotion of heavy equipment and trucks trade like administrative offices, licensing offices, banks, customs, chamber of commerce office, etc to serve the needs of the traders setting up office inside the zone.

Though the exact features of this free zone are yet to be worked out, Sultan bin Sulayem, chief executive of Dubai Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation, said that the new zone is also being set up in line with the already existing Dubai Customs, Automobile Zone (Ducamz) operating from Al Awir.

The new zone will also function under the umbrella of Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority. A working group has been set up from the representatives of truck and heavy equipment trade in order to hold discussions with the authorities on the future plan of action for the zone.

The new zone will also lease out space for those who intend to open shop in the zone as is being done in Ducamz. "However, the period of lease and details of rate will be announced later," Sulayem informed.

According to Sulayem, Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority has already acquired enough land and the development of the land is also completed. "We will be able to accommodate any number of traders in the new zone and there won't be any constraints on the space front," Sulayem said.


International Media Production Zone FZ

The International Media Production Zone (IMPZ) is an eco-friendly media production zone designed to meet the unique needs of the global media production industry.

Spread over a scenic landscape with man made lakes in an area of 43 million square feet along Emirates Road, IMPZ consists of plots of land for construction, pre-engineered units for leasing, residential provisions for families, and blue and white collar workers, community facilities and various recreational amenities.

The premises also includes residential accommodation and facilities for recreation and fitness, a community centre, public bus service, mosque, clinics, parks, schools, supermarkets, shopping centres, banks, ATMs and round-the-clock security.

As a free zone entity, IMPZ benefits include 100% ownership, exemption from all tax and customs duty, and comparatively lower operating costs. The first company to sign on as a Business Partner of IMPZ is the Al Ghurair Printing and Publishing.




Mohammad Bin Rashid FZ

The objectives behind the Mohammed Bin Rashid Technology Park are manifold. Not only is The Technology Park designed to serve as a regional platform to launch international, local and regional technology businesses across the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa, it also provides an ideal vehicle to utilise qualified local resources through sustainable capital-based development at the same time as boosting Dubai's competitive advantage.

Mohammed Bin Rashid Technology Park has been designed and developed after years of extensive research, and as part of phase one it will be located south of Sheikh Zayed road in Jebel Ali, covering a land area of 3 kilometres square.

Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem said, "Over the last few decades Dubai has successfully established itself as an internationally reputed business hub and in recent years the Dubai Government's direction has focused strategically on our role as an international information technology centre. Through this Technology Park we can utilise the gains made in both technology and knowledge-based systems in a specific and focused way, which when channeled and applied to industry will benefit the region as a whole."

"Traditionally economic factors for success have centred on capital, raw material and labour," he explained. "Today in the era of knowledge-based economy promoted by entrepreneurial leadership, success must be built on a foundation of ideas and innovation. The Technology Park will enhance the development of the knowledge based economy, providing a wide range of opportunities for technology companies."
