The festival was announced at a press conference last week, where the SCTDA’s chairman, Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qassimi spoke about the importance of hosting such international events as the Formula 1 World Powerboat Championship to the Authority’s strategy for enhancing Sharjah’s international image, saying, “Organising the Formula 1 UIM Powerboat World Championship for eight consecutive years has generated significant exposure for Sharjah, attracting more than 50 000 spectators annually, and contributing on a large scale to the emirate’s reputation as the region’s best events organiser."

The SCTDA’s organising committee has stated that all necessary preparations for the festival have been done, and that the Authority, in partnership with a number of local sponsors, is confident that the event will be a grand success.  H.E. Mr. Mohamed Ali Al Noman, Director General of the SCTDA is keen to follow up the preparations done by the organising committee, and the developments achieved in terms of the inaugural Sharjah Water Festival, as well as the Final Round of UIM Formula One Powerboat World Championship – Sharjah Grand Prix 2007, which is being organised by SCTDA for the 8th time. The event is a world-class competition, which will be broadcast live to 750 million spectators in more than 150 countries. The world champion of this prestigious international competition will be crowned in Sharjah.

In order to create fun and excitement for audience and marine sports fans, the SWF organizing committee has prepared a variety of sport and entertaining activities, and invited international show teams to perform on Khaled lagoon and Al Majaz Park. The performers arrived in Sharjah last week, and began intensive preparations for today’s big  show.

Stars of  Florida Water-Ski Stunt Team will perform amazing water skiing shows, while the Italian show diving team (salteam banco) will put on their marvellous performance in Al Majaz Park. A dedicated team from Australia will also build sand castles and models in Al Majaz Park. Sharjah’s Department of Culture and Information will provide heritage activities , reflecting Sharjah’s deep-rooted marine heritage, to create an awe-inspiring traditional atmosphere.

Also to be held at Al Majaz Park is the second Sharjah International Balloon Festival show, organised in cooperation with Emirates Balloon. Participants in the event include some of the world’s most reputed ballooning champions. The UAE team will be led by ballooning professional, AbdulAziz Nasir. The sky of Sharjah is set to draw crowds of spectators, in a show that is sure to contribute further to what promises to be a highly  successful event. The stunning Night Glow show will attract spectators to watch the rhythmic illumination of balloons with musical accompaniment.

In addition, a water spectacular called Aqua Fantasia will be hosted at Khaled lagoon. Other activities, including a fireworks display,  will be included in the show to attract large enthusiastic crowds.  In conclusion of the festival  the Final Round of the UIM Formula 1 World  Powerboat Championship on 13th and 14th of December is set to provide a nail-biting finale to all the fun and entertainment, followed by the crowning of this year’s champion.
