- UAE winners join players from the UK and US for December’s final in London
Local winners of the Dubai Duty Free Will to Win Grand Prix tennis tournament have been confirmed following a successful two-day event at the Dubai Tennis Stadium recently.
The unique event for budding tennis prodigies aged 14 and under aims to bring together the tennis communities of London, Dubai and New York. Dubai was announced as a venue back in July, whilst the American city was also added to the itinerary this year.
Over forty entrants competed at the Aviation Club last week with two winners moving through to the final in December. Michael Mmoh was the standout player in the boys’ competition and Rikeetha Pereira won the girls to secure their tickets to London. The winners, who will be flown courtesy of Virgin Atlantic, will join London winners Alby Miller and Holly Monahan and New York victors from Flushing Meadows Daniel Witke and Danielle Toro in their quest to become the international champions.
The final, to be hosted by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) in Roehampton, London on Saturday December 6, will see the winners compete against each other in the best of three-set matches to determine the international champions.
The winners of the London event earlier this year won the fantastic prize to be a part of the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships in February 2009, where they will take part in the ball kid programme and attend coaching clinics with top coaches. The young tennis stars will join 150 locally-based children who are trained as ball kids every year.
“Will to Win is a fantastic initiative which we are proud to support and be a part of,” said Colm McLoughlin, Managing Director of Dubai Duty Free. “It is great that Dubai and New York are now hosting the challenges, in addition to London, and we are looking forward to the event expanding to other cities in the near future, bringing together the international community through grassroots-level tennis.”
Steve Riley, Director of Will to Win, added: “It is fantastic to have completed the Dubai event so successfully and for the winning players to now have a chance to compete in the London final is a wonderful opportunity for them.
“Our plan with Will to Win is to give players from varying countries and cultures the opportunity to compete and enjoy the game of tennis, and I am delighted to see that taking shape.
“We plan to expand further in 2009, and ensure the tournaments’ position as the widest-reaching junior tennis community event in the world.”
