- Action-packed annual White Collar Boxing night a sell-out
The final countdown is on for the 16 competitors who will step into the boxing ring next week for the third White Collar Fight Night (WCFN) on Friday June 6 at Dubai’s Habtoor Grand Resort & Spa Hotel.
Taking part in this exciting event are company directors, managers and consultants, with occupations ranging from construction and finance to nursing and the military. The sell-out night combines a black tie gala dinner and eight White Collar Boxing bouts.
Due to popular demand, organisers the Transguard Group and Lonsdale have increased audience capacity to 820 people, with the bouts also raised from seven to eight.
The event is for people from all walks of life with no prior boxing experience. Taking part in the third White Collar event are four female contestants including. Sarah Thorsen, aged 24, from Copenhagen who is a property consultant for Easy Property Group. She will face opponent Leanne Urbon, 27, Australian and mother of two children.
Said Sarah: “I initially got involved in WCFN 3 just to keep fit but as I love a challenge and because of my Viking blood, I now can’t wait to get into the ring and put on a great show
“My boyfriend brought me to watch the first ever White Collar Boxing event here in Dubai and I was hooked straight away. I was mesmerised by the passion, intensity and fitness of the boxers.”
Leanne, who works for VIP Thoroughbred, a horse syndication company, says: “I decided to enter the WCFN for a few reasons, to get fit, the thrill and experience, to meet new people and to have a great story to tell my kids when I’m too old to walk.
“When I first decided to fight it didn’t mean all that much, but once I got to the gym and gloved up I knew there was no going back, and there is no way that I will give anything less than 100 per cent.”
Each bout consists of three two-minute rounds, fought under the rigorous rules of White Collar and under the supervision of a professional referee.
Said event organiser John Mamea -Wilson: “All of the competitors have been very enthusiastic, concentrating on improving fitness through exercise and diet, as well as learning how to box through supervised sparing sessions. With only a few days to go, they are all eager to get into the ring for the fight of their lives.”
White Collar Boxing originated in the famous Gleasons Gym New York in 1988. The first contests were held between Dr Richard Novak, an attorney and veterinarian, and Dr David Lawrence, a PhD in English literature. After the contest, the two went to dinner to celebrate the birth of a new sport.
Sponsors for the event include Mac Air, Easy Property Group, CHI Developments, Vermeer, Holiday Autos, Mefitpro, EAS and Plafond Flooring.
