DUBAL, IAT SIGN MOU TO DEVELOP UAE NATIONALS
|
- Partnership approach aims to facilitate further training, higher levels of practical education, and improved employability.
Dubai Aluminium Company Limited (“DUBAL”) – the seventh largest producer of primary aluminium in the world and an industrial flagship on the UAE – has taken another step towards fulfilling the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum in terms of supporting UAE Nationals by providing them with employment opportunities. This comes after the signature on Monday 30 June 2008 of a Memorandum of Understanding (“MoU”) between DUBAL and The Institute of Applied Technology (“IAT”), with the aim of establishing the framework form a training partnership between the two organisations.
According to DUBAL’s Mohammed Al Owais (Head of National Programmes & Development), the intended partnership will provide further training services to IAT students so as to improve their given educational possibilities, while enhancing their employability. “In essence, DUBAL has undertaken to provide opportunities for IAT students to undertake worksite visits; employment for IAT students who meet DUBAL’s workforce requirements; and information about the skills our company requires from the labour force. In exchange, IAT will allow students to undertake supervised worksite visits to DUBAL; and to participate in work placement programmes within our company.”
The one-year MoU was signed at DUBAL’s Jebel Ali head office by Marwan Al Sawaleh (General Manager: HR & OE, DUBAL) and Dr Abdullatif Mohammed Al Shamsi (Managing Director, IAT). The partnership agreement reflects DUBAL’s commitment to the training of UAE Nationals for all levels of employment. The company’s many UAE National Development initiatives include Pre-Employment Courses (“PECs”) in several disciplines. DUBAL’s PEC: Craft Programme, in particular, offers an excellent transition opportunity for IAT students – it prepares UAE National school-leavers for employment as Maintenance Craftsmen (Technicians) in DUBAL’s different maintenance areas It also creates a foundation for further development of UAE National trainees in technical subjects, for employment in the plant and even further education at a later date.
“Importantly, the technical knowledge and skills training provided to trainees, who come from different educational backgrounds, empowers them with internationally recognised standards of competence,” says Al Owais. “The four-year-long, PEC: Craft Programme combines theoretical study with practical on-the-job experience in electrical, mechanical or instrumentation maintenance. Trainees are expected to demonstrate, through written and practical tests, their ability to achieve pre-set percentage pass marks to remain on the course. On successful completion of the programme, course graduates are offered employment as full-time Junior Maintenance Technicians in their respective disciplines.”
