Consumers should ask salespersons for a bill
 

 

The Sharjah Economic Development Department (SEDD) has reiterated its recent calls to purchasers of cooking gas cylinders to request an itemized bill from the salespersons listing detailed items and prices, stressing that obtaining a bill for the item is the consumer’s legal right.
 
This guidance follows a number of complaints received by the SEDD’s Client Service Section and Commercial Control and Protection Department from clients reporting frequent violation of price guidelines for cooking gas cylinders issued in the emirate recently.
 
The department clarified that it cannot take the necessary action against those in violation of the law unless a legal proof of purchase is presented along with the complaint. They added that any verbal complaint is null and void unless the complainant can support their claim with a written bill from the sales party, containing the required data about the items, including price, size, date of purchase, name of seller and signature. Obtaining a bill of purchase is a consumer right that should not be neglected, the department affirmed. 
 
The consumer should also check the company’s sticker on the cylinder as it was reported that some companies do not exchange the old cylinder for a new one, despite the SEDD’s instructions to withdraw old cylinders – those made in or before 1992 – from the market.
