Al Hanoo Holding, one of the biggest real estate developers in the Middle East, has finished linking the islands of the Al Nujoom Islands project – the biggest waterfront project in the emirate of Sharjah – to the Global Positioning System (GPS), a space-based radio navigation system that provides reliable positioning, navigation, and timing services to users on a continuous worldwide basis.
The Al Nujoom Islands project, which comprises of 13 sectors – three mainland areas and ten islands – is considered one of the biggest waterfront projects in the region, its water canals extending, collectively, over 35 km. Al Hanoo has specified that 60 percent of the total project area will be dedicated to these canals, as well as green spaces, gardens and parks, while only 40 percent of the 60 million square feet will be utilized for buildings and facilities. This makes the project a distinguished landmark in the Gulf in terms of investment size and building area, and especially concerning its strategic and unique location.
Speaking of the accomplishment, Sheik Abdullah Fahid Al Shakrah, Al Hanoo Holding Chairman said, “Al Nujoom Islands is one of the region’s most comprehensive waterfront projects, and we have made sure that all the necessary services will be in place to provide residents with every advantage in the future. The project includes business, residential, office and green spaces, in addition to ports that cater for large ships as well as smaller fishing and recreational vessels.”
“Our decision to work on connecting the project’s islands to GPS was a natural one. We used the latest scientific methods to identify locations via satellite, using cutting-edge equipment and technology, with the supervision of navigation experts. This move should help project residents, visitors or remote individuals to always know where they are and be able to find their way to and from Al Nujoom Islands, as well as to any place within the project once it has been completed,” added Al Shakrah.
GPS, is a well-known and extremely useful tool that is available in any language and is widely used throughout the UAE and the rest of the world. The user inserts a particular address, which the GPS then converts into animated maps, making use of satellite information to specify map coordinates, and giving detailed, accurate routes to the specified locations. It guarantees precise and correct directions and routes, from any starting point, and the fact that it provides accurate location and time information in any weather, day or night, anywhere in the world, means that it can also be a valuable tool in the case of people being lost at sea or in the desert, or any other hostile environment, as well as in the aftermath of any natural disasters.
The Al Nujoom Island project comprises of three stages. The first stage, which consists of five sections, is equivalent to 20% of the total project area of 60 million square feet. Related development works are expected to be completed by the end of the third stage in 2010.
