The Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) announced that the number of subscribers to carpooling service, known as ‘Sharekni’, exceeded 4525 subscribers after just one month from launching this service.
It was confirmed by Mohammed bin Fahad, Director of Planning & Business Development Dep’t at RTA Public Transport Agency, that Mobility Programmes & Transport Management Section reported that the exclusive website (www.sharekni.ae) developed for this service is witnessing an increase in the daily number of visitors who wish to make use of this service such the total number of actual beneficiaries reached 370 subscribers and 118 vehicle owners obtained permits to benefit from this free service.
“RTA is always keen to launch strategic initiatives to sort out traffic bottlenecks such as ‘Sharekni’; which is being undertaken after exhaustive studies and wide-ranging field surveys carried out by a special work team at Public Transport Agency in association with a world-class consultative company. The study revealed that car occupancy in Dubai is 1.6 passengers per vehicle; which is one of the problems aggravating traffic congestion of Dubai roads.
“Signing up to this service is made easy through keying-in some information about vehicle owners wishing to commute passengers on their vehicles, or information about passengers looking for vehicles to lift them. The process is being managed through the webpage unveiled by Public Transport Agency in a press conference held last month at the Head Office of the Agency at Muhaisnah and attended by a cluster of media representatives in the UAE” added Bin Fahad.
It is worth-noting that ‘Sharekni’ service is based on the concept of having two or more passengers working in one place or neighbouring places share one car or using a number of cars alternately from their place of living. The step effectively contributes to cutting the number of private vehicles and definitely contributes to easing traffic bottlenecks on Dubai roads.
