  •  Dubai Cares and Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation Highlighted as Philanthropic, Innovative Solutions to Global Challenges

Through its involvement in the annual Clinton Global Initiative, Dubai reaffirms its commitment to changing people’s lives for the better and to shape their communities by equipping them with world-class knowledge, education, willpower, confidence, and most importantly, hope, said Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State and Dubai Cares Chairperson of the Board of Directors.

Her Excellency Al Hashimy’s remarks were made during the Education Working Group Luncheon on the second day of the 2008 Annual Clinton Global Initiative held in New York from 23-26 September, 2008. The annual event brought together more than 130 leading CEOs and over 50 current and former heads of state to examine urgent global challenges in an endeavour to transform the awareness into tangible action.

Moderated by Education Group Chair, Gene Sperling, the Education Working Group Luncheon also heard from Valentino Achak Deng, Founder, The Valentino Achak Deng Foundation; Jasmine Whitbread, Chief Executive, Save the Children UK; and, Maya Ajmera, President of the Global Fund for Children.

Al Hashimy cited both Dubai Cares, a charitable establishment that aims to provide access to primary education in developing countries, and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation, which seeks to develop future leaders and create a knowledge-based society in the region, as examples of Dubai’s commitment to being an active global citizen.

“Dubai Cares and the Foundation underpin Dubai and the UAE’s ambition to take its place on the world stage as a responsible, global citizen. What began as personal initiatives of Dubai’s visionary leadership – inspired by a desire to reach out to those in need – have evolved into full-fledged organizations with a recognized record of achievement:  Dubai Cares, for example, is currently the largest charitable establishment solely devoted to improving primary education around the world,” added HE Al Hashimy.

To date, Dubai Cares has reached four million children, laid the groundwork to train 22,379 teachers, build and renovate 2,072 schools, and is helping establish 3,157 parent-teacher associations. It is actively engaged with international aid agencies – including UNICEF, UNRWA, Oxfam, Save the Children and Care International - to develop primary education programs and help countries meet their universal primary education goals, as per United Nations Millennium Development Goals (UN MDG) 2 and 3. In its role as a strategic coordinator, Dubai Cares is also playing an important role in developing a global partnership for development, in line with UN MDG 8.

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation was launched with an endowment of US$10 billion as a personal initiative of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and aims to develop the knowledge and human capabilities of the Arab world for the creation of a future generation of leaders in the region through a wide array of pioneering projects and programmes in three main strategic areas: knowledge, culture and entrepreneurship.
