- 1st International Retailer to Implement New Initiative in the UAE
Marks & Spencer Al-Futtaim, a leader in family fashion, beauty, food and home ware, this week rolls out its new environmentally friendly oxo-biodegradable* carrier bags in all five stores across the UAE (Dubai Festival City, Deira, Wafi City Mall, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi), alongside the introduction of trendy 100% organic cotton shoppers, advancing with the Marks & Spencer 60 point Plan A* in the Gulf which is an extension from the Marks & Spencer UK Plan A ‘eco’ plan.
Marks & Spencer Al-Futtaim in the UAE, is the first international retailer to implement oxo-biodegradable carrier bags, sourced and produced by local company Fujairah Plastics in Sharjah. Fujairah Plastics have acquired the d2w™ technology (the key additive in the plastic film) from Eco-polymers who are, the exclusive distributors of d2w™ manufactured by a UK based company Symphony Plastics.
Oxo-biodegradable plastic has numerous advantages, including complete disintegration without emitting any harmless toxins into the environment, in about 12-18 months wherever there is oxygen present. It can also be recycled alongside plastic waste, thus eliminating the detrimental effects on the environment that normal plastic bags have, which plague the ecosystem for up to 1,000 years.
Nigel Rea, General Manager, Marks & Spencer Al-Futtaim, said: “As part of our core values, we have always believed in conducting our business responsibly. The latest oxo-biodegradable technology offered by Fujairah Plastics will assist us in providing a much needed solution to help protect the environment. Currently, this is the best alternative to regular plastic bag usage available in the Middle East.”
Together with the launch of oxo-biodegradable bags, Marks & Spencer Al-Futtaim has also introduced its must-have fashionable 100% organic cotton shopper bags. Priced at AED 25, and available in lime and ecru, the bags will encourage customers to reduce the consumption of plastic bags.
The launch of the organic shopper sees Marks & Spencer Al-Futtaim continue its commitment to Plan A, by ensuring efforts are ploughed into the use of sustainable raw materials. The organic cotton is grown without pesticides and uses traditional methods like crop rotation, hand weeding and natural pest control to produce crops with minimal impact on the environment. No profit is being made by the sale of these bags.
