- Ambitious Federal Public Healthcare Initiative Gains Momentum
The first in a series of on-going educational and training programmes for Wareed, the Federal initiative designed to revolutionize public healthcare sector delivery in the UAE, was delivered today to key Ministry of Health personnel and UAE public healthcare professionals in order to familiarize them with the project’s management, implementation timelines, benefits, and usage.
Held at the Sharjah Medical School and attended by 250 MOH executives and heads of concerned departments such as radiology, pharmacy etc as well as medical district directors. The event comprised a series of in-depth presentations and demonstrations detailing the diverse components of Wareed while focusing on the project’s key aspects and their applications on the day-to-day work of UAE-based medical professionals.
The event marked the official introduction of Wareed to internal stakeholders within the MOH as well as to the country’s medical community, the members of which will play a pivotal role towards the achievement of the new system’s objectives and its acceptance by the general public.
Wareed is a change towards a better, more efficient, effective, productive and error-free public healthcare sector. Proper education and training is crucial to instil positive change in the mindset of all layers of MOH employees as well as the UAE’s healthcare professionals.
Once completed, Wareed will provide physicians with greater access to patients’ medical history, complete, faster and accurate access to critical patient information at any given time and increased efficiency and collaboration amongst specialists and staff.
Paramedical staff will gain instant access to critical and up-to-date patient history during a crisis, improved communication with physicians and other healthcare facilities, in addition to reduced incidence of medical errors as patients’ data is captured, stored and retrieved more accurately.
Medical establishments will also benefit through improved performance indicators, and reduced operational costs due to increased administration efficiency and streamlined management processes. State-run hospitals and clinics will also see an increase in effectiveness and efficiency in analyzing departmental performance, tracking healthcare trends, monitoring business continuity and disaster recovery.
The event followed last month’s Preliminary Design and Onsite Walkthrough assessments conducted by the project team across all 14 public hospitals earmarked to adopt Wareed. A further 58 government clinics will also roll out the programme over the next 30 months.
It also followed hard on the heels of the Wareed Design event attended by more than 100 members from 11 subcommittees formed recently to represent all hospitals and their functional areas in order to provide input on their specific requirements. The system provider will evaluate the subcommittees’ feedback and incorporate their recommendations to the overall design. A series of system validation events is planned for the next weeks to evaluate the design.
Wareed will be implemented over three years with the first two medical facilities scheduled to come on line by mid 2009. Every three months thereafter two hospitals along with the affiliated primary care centers will go live with the system. All hospitals and clinics will be fully utilizing the system by October 2011
MOH assigned Hybrid Health Solutions (HHS), a Dubai-based project management and solution providers to manage the project, which will be implemented by a consortium of internationally renowned healthcare technology providers led by leading IT systems integration and consultancy Company, iCapital.
The consortium includes system providers, Cerner Corporation, a leading US IT Healthcare specialist, Gulf Business Machines (GBM), that will provide the hardware and networking infrastructure for Wareed, and Mubadala-owned, Injazat Data Systems, which will support Wareed with the data center infrastructure and management.
Wareed will encompass the modernization of computer equipment and office applications across all the medical facilities involved in the project, provision of centralized help desks manned by professional support staff, and the launch of a web portal to provide a gateway for electronic interaction between the public, patients, physicians and hospital staff.
