Heriot-Watt University Dubai, a British institution renowned for its academic excellence and commitment to delivering professionally relevant programmes, has just launched a new undergraduate civil engineering degree. This new, BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering, degree has been introduced as a response to growing demand, and is scheduled to start in September 2009.

Civil engineering provides the underpinning infrastructure upon which civilisation depends, and is growing in importance both regionally and globally. Civil engineering graduates typically progress to manage projects including the design and construction of key built environment assets, commercial and industrial developments including offices and power systems, water supply and waste management systems and transportation systems including road, rail, metro and air transit. Civil engineers are responsible for innovative and creative projects, which typically feature advanced technology and involve high risk and capital. Heriot-Watt’s civil engineering course will provide students with the skills and knowledge which employers are looking for and will facilitate access to a range of career opportunities, from building and contracting to specialist consultancy and advanced research.

Heriot-Watt is already established as a leading university for civil engineering in the UK, with its graduates being highly sought after by employers. This pedigree will, therefore, provide students in Dubai with the same excellent opportunities. The University’s reputation in this field was strengthened recently with the appointment of the Heriot-Watt’s Professor Paul Jowitt to the extremely prestigious position of the next President of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Speaking about the new BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering course, Professor Brian Smart, a Deputy Principal of the University and Executive Dean and Head of the Dubai Campus, said, “Civil Engineering is an area in which Heriot-Watt excels and we are delighted to be able to offer our course to students here in Dubai. It will provide them with a strong educational grounding, in addition to excellent career opportunities. We look forward to our first intake of students in September this year.”

The four year course is a comprehensive route to learning the main civil engineering disciplines of structures, geotechnics, water engineering and transportation engineering. The core curriculum includes instruction in all of the main subject areas, with the first part developing the fundamental skills of analysis and problem solving, while the later years covers more specific technical topics. Design, Health & Safety and Sustainable development form continuous threads throughout all years of the programme. There is also a strong emphasis on the personal development of students within a professional environment.

Students also have the option to continue to the MEng course at the end of their 4th year, undertaking a 5th year at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. The MEng course fully satisfies the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE). The BEng (Hons) course is of 4 years duration, and requires a period of further study after graduation to satisfy the academic base for Chartered Engineer.

Applications are now being accepted for this course for the September 2009 intake. Prospective students can call HWU on 04 361 6999 or email dubaienquiries@hw.ac.uk to talk to the Admissions team and to find out about scholarships available.

Heriot-Watt was the first international university to open its doors in Dubai International Academic City in 2005, and is Scotland’s most international academic institution, with one third of its students on campus in Scotland being from outside of the UK.

Heriot Watt’s Dubai Campus has grown from strength to strength over the past three years, and is expected to reach over 2,000 students as the University’s reputation grows in the Middle East region as the University of choice for high quality UK education.
