Mohamed Al Mady retained Chairman, Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association

- Industry veteran Abdulwahab Al-Sadoun appointed new Secretary-General of regional body
Mr. Mohamed Al-Mady has been retained Chairman of the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association, (GPCA), a regional grouping of some of the most powerful players in the petrochemicals and chemical sectors. Mr. Al-Mady, who is also Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) will continue to head the GPCA for another three years till 2011.
The decision to retain Mr. Al-Mady as Chairman was taken at the GPCA’s Annual General Meeting that was held in Dubai on March 25th, after it was resolved at the AGM that the eight founding members of GPCA will become permanent members of the board. As such it was also decided to retain Mr. Hamad Abdul Rahman Al Terkait, the President of EQUATE as Vice Chairman, GPCA and Mr. Abdulaziz Alhajri, CEO of BOROUGE as the Treasurer.
Formed in March 2006, GPCA, which has its headquarters in Dubai, has eight founding members including Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC), EQUATE petrochemical Co. (EQUATE), Gulf Petrochemical Industries Co. (GPIC), Petrochemical Industries Co. (PIC), Qatar Petrochemical Co. Ltd. (QAPCO), Qatar Vinyl Co. Ltd. (QVC), National Industrialization Company (TASNEE), and Abu Dhabi Polymers Co. Ltd. (Borouge). The membership of the GPCA has risen from eight members in 2006 to 141 today.
At the 2009 AGM, the CEOs of Chemaweyaat, Sipchem, Alujain, Petrorabigh, Qafco and Qatar Petroleum were elected to the new board following elections that were held to fill the six remaining seats on the board, in addition to the seats held by the eight founding members.
GPCA aims to put its resources together to enhance the role of the region in international debate and policy making vis-a-vis petrochemicals, fertilizers and chemicals, to facilitate regional cooperation, and to ensure that growth is both sustainable and socially responsible. GPCA’s mission is to offer its members networking opportunities through various platforms to meet and share knowledge; exchange opinions and experiences and advocate the development, growth and prosperity of the petrochemicals and chemicals industry and related businesses in the Gulf.
Meanwhile, Dr. Abdulwahab Al-Sadoun, an industry veteran has been appointed as the new Secretary General of GPCA, replacing the founding Secretary General, Mr. Abdullah S. Bin Zaid Al-Hagbani.
Dr. Al-Sadoun, who was welcomed by members of the GPCA at the AGM, is an expert on the petrochemicals industry with a deep understanding of both the technical and economic aspects of the petrochemical value chain and its downstream industries. A highly experienced general management, marketing, strategy, business development and project management executive, Dr. Al-Sadoun has proven experience in a number of leadership positions. He was previously Director-General, Energy Sector of the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority (SAGIA). Prior to this position, he was the President of PetroBaas for Industrial Investments Co., Saudi Arabia, Vice President of Al-Sharq Plastic Industries Co, Saudi Arabia and Director, Industrial Information and Coordinating Department, Gulf Organisation for Industrial Consulting (GOIC) in Qatar.
Dr. Al-Sadoun holds a PhD in the field of Industry Chemistry obtained from King’s College University of London and is also a graduate of the General Management Program (GMP3) of Harvard Business School.
Every year, the GPCA organises its Annual Forum, which has become one of the most important events in the calendar of the global petrochemicals and chemicals industry that gives international experts the opportunity to delve into some of the most pressing issues, exchange ideas and create the ideal setting for networking opportunities between industry decision-makers and corporate leaders.
The Third Annual Forum of the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) was held in December at Atlantis, The Palm, Dubai with a line-up of prominent industry figures and experts from around the world enlightening delegates on the impact of the global financial crisis and ways of meeting the challenges ahead in the region’s petrochemicals and chemicals sectors. It was inaugurated by HE Abdulla Bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, Deputy Premier, Minister of Energy and Industry, Qatar; Chairman and Managing Director, Qatar Petroleum.
