UAE Ministry of Economy call for Arab unity against piracy on World Intellectual Property Day 2009

•  Emirates maintains lowest piracy rate in the Gulf

 
Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz Al Shihhi, Director General, UAE Ministry of Economy, said that Arab unity is very crucial to combat intellectual piracy. He was addressing the World Intellectual Property Day celebrations held in Dubai, organised by the Ministry.
 
Mr Al Shihhi said that the UAE recognizes the severe negative economic and social consequences of intellectual piracy. “The World Intellectual Property Day it sheds the light on the role of intellectual property in supporting the performance of small and medium businesses. The UAE is considered as one of the leading countries in protecting intellectual property rights. We place great emphasis on the role of intellectual property rights in supporting competency and in attracting foreign investments,” he added
 
Mr Al Shhihi said that the global financial crisis has turned the attention to SMEs, and asserted the need to develop man power to be more creative and productive, and to adopt steps to protect the sector from intellectual piracy.
 
He said that the UAE has taken many efforts to support the small and medium businesses, by establishing special funds and institutions to support their performance. “The Ministry of Economy has provided the legal framework to protect the SME projects from intellectual piracy, in order to encourage creativity. According to the Business Software Alliance the UAE has recorded lowest piracy rates,” he said.
 
The Ministry is also working on a study to benefit from the Italian experience in the small and medium businesses domain.
 
World Intellectual Property Day, celebrated annually on April 26, was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization in 2001 to raise awareness about the role of intellectual property in social development and also to recognize the valuable           contributions of innovators and artists to social growth.
 
The event adopts a theme each year, with 2009 focusing on “Green Innovation.” Microsoft will mark the occasion with a special dinner that will also honour anti-piracy advocates from the GCC region’s government sector.
