  • Department of Municipal Affairs Drives Base Map Data Integration Across Municipalities and Government

In a step towards adopting a new unified base map system for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA), the regulatory and legislative body of municipal system of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, led a seminar on cross-municipal integration of geographic data.

Based on the outcome of a specially commissioned 3 months study, the DMA-led seminar set out best practice for generating and maintaining the most up-to-date base map data sets.

H.E. Ahmed Shareef, Undersecretary of the Department of Municipal Affairs said: “The integration of existing and future data into an unified accurate base map marks a major milestone in making Abu Dhabi’s future development a reality on the ground.

“For the first time, we are able to set up a robust, integrated Emirate-wide data set for the foundation base map. With the new unified system, government, planners and developers will have access to a continuously updated control document, making specific purpose mapping for key activities such as zoning and real estate development more rapid and accurate.”

The study and the seminar focused on three main areas:

  • base map as foundation for geographical information system (GIS) activities of Abu Dhabi government

  • best practices in generating and maintaining base map by sharing local, regional, and international experiences

  • business benefits of data integration.

The base map system incorporates features, such as a process of collecting digital plans of developments at as-built and design stages. As a result it is projected to result in efficiency savings, eliminating duplication of data generation and maintenance.
DMA is collaborating with Abu Dhabi System and Information Centre (ADSIC) to implement the unified base map and replace all other multiple data sources in use across the Emirate.

The seminar was held at Beach Rotana hotel and was attended by Managers from Abu Dhabi Systems and Information centre (ADSIC), municipal executive directors and business manager of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Western Region Municipalities.

Currently, the Department of Municipal Affairs and Municipalities of Abu Dhabi Emirate are showcasing their projects and services in Geographical Information Systems and Geospatial Data at Map Middle East 2009 which is set to conclude on April 28, 2009.
