Sulayem to attend meeting on McLaren issue
|
FIA Vice President for Sport Mohammed Ben Sulayem left for Paris today to attend an extraordinary meeting of the World Motor Sport Council called to deliberate upon the McLaren issue.
Formula 1 team Vodafone McLaren Mercedes have been invited to appear before the extraordinary meeting to answer charges of breaching articles of the FIA’s International Sporting Code.
The issue revolves around McLaren being accused of knowingly making untrue statements to Australian Grand Prix stewards about instructions issued to its champion driver Lewis Hamilton to allow Toyota’s Jarno Trulli to pass when both cars were behind the safety car.
McLaren have been further accused of getting Hamilton to support and confirm the untrue statement to stewards knowing that as a direct result of this Trulli and Toyota had been unfairly penalized.
Following McLaren’s expected deposition on Wednesday (April 29), Sulayem will take part in subsequent discussions on the charges and be part of the deliberation that will decide on the future course of action.
“It is an important meeting and I would not like to speculate on its outcome as it would be unfair to do so at this stage,” Sulayem said before his departure to Paris.
Sulayem noted that the FIA, as the sport’s world governing body, treats all teams on par, adding that the extraordinary meeting would look to agree upon the best way forward to ensure the sport does not suffer in any manner.
“We will work towards putting the sport back on line, and ensure that the remainder of the season continues in a healthy, vibrant manner,” Sulayem said.
