The Sharjah Economic Development Department (SEDD), in association with Al-Iktissad Wal-Aamal Group, has announced the launch of the ‘Special Economic Zones Forum’ (Free Zones, Industrial Zones and New Economic Cities), to be held at Radisson SAS Resort Hotel in Sharjah from 10 to 11 May 2009. The announcement was made at a press conference held today at the Radisson SAS Resort Hotel.
The forum is the first forum of its kind in the region and will be held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the UAE Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and will be attended by government ministers and policy makers, VIPs and dignitaries, elite businessmen and investors, and representatives of leading international organizations and officials in charge of special economic zones and free zones.
The press conference included an introduction of the Zone by the organizers, and a presentation on the trend to further enhance the investor-friendly climate and legal infrastructure in the emirate of Sharjah, with the aim of further improving its appeal to investors.
H.E. Ali Salem Al Mahmood General Manager of SEDD, Mr Faisal Abou Zaki, Deputy General Manager of Al-Iktissad Wal-Aamal Group, and representatives of sponsors briefed the attendees on the latest developments achieved in preparation for hosting the forum. The organizers also clarified the objective of the forum and the role it will play in supporting the Sharjah’s economic development and boosting the emirate’s leading position in the region.
Speaking at the conference, Al Mahmood said: “This forum comes at a time when the global crisis is causing us to reflect on our efforts to enhance the role of real economy and promote joint Arab, regional and international economic efforts to cushion the impact of global recession. We aim to promote the role of a self-sufficient economy that relies on competitiveness and consumer sovereignty in the face of economic alliances, and we have the strategies necessary for us to enhance the international position of our local economies”.
In his statement, Zaki said: “Many Arab countries have set up free zones, industrial zones and special ‘economic cities’ as an essential part of their development plans, and their economic reform and liberalization programmes. There are currently more than 35 free zones in the Arab world, distributed amongst 13 countries with a total investment value of US$8 billion, in addition to an increasing number of industrial zones and special economic zones, which have a total investment value of over US$90 billion”.
The strategic sponsors of the forum are Al Hanoo Holding, Emirates Industrial Cities, and the diamond sponsors are Emirates Investment Group, SNASCO, Etisalat, Sharjah Islamic Bank, Jordan Industrial Cities Corporation, and Air Arabia. Radisson SAS will be the host hotel for the event and Alpha Tours will be the official ground handler.
