• Introducing Family Medicine to Abu Dhabi

 
Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) managed by Cleveland Clinic announces the official conversion of 5 primary health care clinics into Family Medicine Clinics starting from 6 June 2009. SKMC is owned and operated by SEHA, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
 
The Family Medicine Model of primary health care is known for its patient-centered approach and patient advocacy. Accordingly, Cleveland Clinic, Ohio has adopted this model to improve prevention of disease, deliver state-of-the-art care, and strengthen the patient’s trust in the healthcare industry. “We aspire to introduce this model here in Abu Dhabi to offer the success of the family medicine concept witnessed back in Cleveland Clinic” stated Dr. Scott Strong, CEO of SKMC. “Our aim is to emphasize preventive healthcare and counseling to promote wellness. We are concerned not only about individual issues, but the family's special needs”.
 
Dr. Ali Khalili, Chair of Family Medicine, explains why it’s for the benefit of the patient to visit Family Medicine clinics. He says “family medicine focuses on process and skills development of the health care team to enhance patient care and regain the patient’s trust. It involves using new technology and treatments that are scientifically proven”.
 
“Our family practitioners manage the broad array of health care needs of young children, teens, adults and older adults, often caring for many members of the same families. They can provide general, ongoing health care for your entire family. They make a point of knowing the family health history of a patient and how it effects the patient’s overall health”, Dr. Ali added.” The Family Medicine approach uses the best ethics and attitudes in delivering health care including lifestyle, pharmacologic, mental health and alternative medicine in conjunction with evidence based medicine”.
 
SKMC Family Medicine Clinics employs Family Medicine Consultants, Specialists and Medical practitioners along with nurses and technicians as part of a health care team. Each clinic will provide pharmacy and lab with some clinics having  x-ray facilities.
