- Addition further evolves Downtown Burj Dubai’s art destination status
Emaar Properties has unveiled a new sculpture in Downtown Burj Dubai, adding to the community’s appeal as an art destination. The new addition is Al Sidra, a free-shaped bronze sculpture by Kuwaiti sculptor Mr Sami Mohamed Al Saleh. Emaar Properties Chairman Mr Mohamed Alabbar unveiled Al Sidra, located on Emaar Boulevard next to Al Manzil hotel.
An accomplished sculptor with several international installations, Mr Al Saleh was commissioned by Ms Samia Saleh, owner of the Courtyard Gallery, Dubai, to create a sculpture for Downtown Burj Dubai.
Al Sidra derives its inspiration from the Sidra tree, which is characteristic to the region and is particularly recognized for its endurance and resistance to harsh climatic conditions. The sculpture is also a salute to the contribution of women that have helped build the Arab society and their inherent strength to face and overcome challenges no matter what the environment. The sculpture is 320 x 200 x 130 cm in dimension, and has been erected on a marble and concrete base.
Mr Alabbar said: “The Middle East region has a proud tradition of art, which we are nurturing through the Art Programme for Downtown Burj Dubai. With over 1,000 art pieces commissioned for Burj Dubai and the 500-acre community, Emaar is building a new cultural dynamic that will inspire artists across the world. As a thought-provoking sculpture, Al Sidra will also promote dialogue in art and inspire more youngsters to follow their passion for art.”
Mr Al Saleh said: “Al Sidra is my tribute to the Arab society, particularly, its women. By deriving inspiration from the highly resilient Sidra that is native to the region, the sculpture seeks to encourage on-lookers to respect nature. As a community, the Arab community has withstood harsh conditions to grow, prosper and branch out successfully – one aspect highlighted by the sculpture.”
Sami Mohamed’s works are characterised by its deep association with humanity, exploring the struggle of mankind against forces that are beyond its control, and has carved a distinct identity in the Arab art world.
Downtown Burj Dubai’s new art addition complements the Horse 2007, a bronze sculpture by world-renowned figurative artist Mr Fernando Botero that was unveiled recently.
Described as the new heart of the city, Downtown Burj Dubai is the flagship development of Emaar Properties. Apart from several residential communities, the 500-acre community features The Dubai Mall and Souk Al Bahar, four hotels and Emaar Boulevard, billed to be one of the world’s finest boulevards.
