“The worldwide demand for protecting lives and the environment is one of the four key megatrends DuPont will intensively focus on  with innovation and products in the future”, Koen van Neyghen, President, DuPont Safety Resources, Europe, Middle East and Africa explained during the award ceremony. “The winners of the 2009 DuPont Safety Awards recognize that growth-oriented companies have not taken their focus off of safety or SHE matters - a testament that safety is a business value and catalyst for growth.”

The awards are organized by an independent organizing committee, called Nexdor. Together with a panel of renowned experts, this committee considers all programs, projects or contributions in the field of safety in the workplace or in society in general. It also considers printed works containing important innovations
or implementation of improvements connected to safety. Details of the categories, online application forms and a wealth of information on the DuPont Safety Awards can be accessed at www.leadersforum.dupont/awards.

Appendix 1: Details of the 2009 DuPont Safety Award Winners

Category A--Performance Improvement: Danone Waters
Danone Waters, a division of the Danone Group, is one of the global leaders in bottled water. Since launching an initiative called “Wise” in 2004, Danone Waters have reduced their Lost Time Accident Frequency Rate (FR) by more than 85%. This improvement was driven by the consistent implementation of a standardized safety approach. In addition, the organization invested in a dedicated resource to benchmark and drive standardization across global sites, established Safety Network conventions that enabled the sharing of best practices, and issued quarterly newsletters on key safety messages and results. The WISE safety approach has been implemented across forty-seven countries in which Danone Waters operates.

Category B--Innovative Approach: British Sugar
British Sugar is the leading supplier of sugars in the UK. The company initiated two-way confidential discussions on personal safety matters, called Safety Performance Discussions (SPD), between line managers and team members. The initiative is conducted through a computer-based program whereby a number of predetermined safety questions, themes and topics are discussed, and action plans are developed. This approach, conceptualized and implemented by British Sugar employees, enables every employee, including seasonal, temporary and contractual staff, the opportunity for personal one-to-one meetings with their line manager.   This initiative has contributed to demonstrable reduction in injury rates of over 70% during the last six years at British Sugar.

Category C--Visible Management Commitment: London Underground’s Maintenance Directorate
London Underground’s Maintenance Directorate is responsible for the upkeep and repair of two-thirds of the London Underground network. This comprises of trains, stations, signalling, tunnels, bridges, escalators and other related infrastructure. Senior management commitment to safety has contributed to LU’s safety improvements, through a variety of initiatives. Such initiatives include personal site visits to understand the circumstances surrounding every Lost Time Injury, support of an annual Health, Safety and Environment conference, involvement in all incident investigations, inclusion of HSE incidents and injuries in daily management calls, and notifications of incidents via text message and email. These initiatives have enabled the Maintenance area to introduce and embed a culture of individual ownership towards safety throughout the organization. “It personally gives me and everyone in London Underground’s Maintenance Directorate real pride to win such a prestigious international award for safety leadership. We will never become complacent about safety, and will continue to build on this achievement to make even greater progress on our journey to be a world class Tube for a world class city,” Phil Hufton, Chief Maintenance Officer, London Underground.

Category D--Sustainable Business Impact: Borealis AG
Borealis AG is a leading provider of innovative, value-creating plastics solutions. With its acquisition of Agrolinz Melamine International GmbH (AMI) in 2007, Borealis embarked on an integration process that included a special program on improving AMI’s safety performance, called “Step Change in Safety.” By the end of 2008, AMI drastically improved its safety performance results achieving targets close to the Borealis group performance. Key achievements include the development of AMI leadership commitment, a new organizational structure, establishment of leading indicators, implementation of supporting tools and systems. Besides the improvements in safety performance, the Borealis/AMI management established a second project “Way Forward Program” which focused on implementing

behaviour-based safety and process safety management to ensure that safety performance improvements remained sustainable.

Category E--Cultural Evolution: Egyptian LNG
Egyptian LNG is Egypt’s largest liquefied natural gas joint venture companies consisting of both local and international shareholders. In order to ensure a safer workplace and positively influence Egyptian safety culture, ELNG developed a behaviour-based safety program called “WOSSIT” (Weekly Observation Site Safety Inspection Tour program). The WOSSIT program optimizes the site safety observation process by developing hazard-based observation checklists and aims to encourage safety partnerships between employees and managements. All of the data is recorded and analyzed, with weekly training sessions to monitor correction actions. WOSSIT is communicated and tracked on a weekly basis. Since 2005, ELNG has recorded close to 9498 observations.
