Anlene, in partnership with MBC’s morning show, ‘Sabah Al Kheir Ya Arab’, invites the public to take its first steps to prevent osteoporosis and join the Anlene “Walk for Bones” event on Friday, 20 November at Safa Park, Dubai. The large-scale walk is being hosted to raise awareness of osteoporosis, a crippling disease that affects millions of people around the world, including in the Middle East. The UAE Ministry of Health, Dubai Bone and Joint Center (DBAJ) and Emirates Arthritis Foundation are joining Anlene to raise awareness of the cause.

In October, Anlene revealed that 40% of women scanned in UAE and KSA during the bone scanning program held last year were at risk of osteoporotic fractures.  Anlene, a specialized adult milk product, formulated for optimum bone health to help prevent osteoporosis bone deterioration.

“Young adults in particular need to understand the risks if bone health is ignored. Initiatives like this highlight health-related issues that we don’t understand or tend to overlook and I would encourage everyone to attend this event so that they can be better informed, take the necessary steps to prevention and support the cause to fight against osteoporosis,” said Dr Muna Al Kuwari, Director of Primary Healthcare, Ministry of Health.

Fonterra, the company behind Anlene, has spent more than US$40 million in the last decade to better understand osteoporosis and works closely with the International Osteoporosis Foundation to raise awareness.  In 2006, Anlene launched an Asia-wide research programme into the growing incidence of osteoporosis in the region by bone-scanning three million people across nine countries.

So far more than 1.8 million of those free bone scans have been conducted and provide invaluable insight into the state of bone health in Asia and the Middle East.

Mr Amr Farghal, Managing Director, Fonterra Brands Middle East, Africa and CIS, believes the scale of the disease is often underestimated. “The Anlene Walk for Bones is one way we can help educate and inform the public on how they can protect themselves against a potentially crippling disease. This is a serious public health issue, but one that can be prevented. With greater awareness and understanding, we can encourage people to take the right preventative measures to tackle it.”

Dr. Humeira Badsha, Consultant Rheumatologist at DBAJ, also said that optimum bone health is easily achievable. “Walking is one of the many weight bearing exercises that will help minimize the risk. Complement this with a healthy diet that covers the daily recommended doses of Vitamin D and calcium, along with other nutrients such zinc and magnesium, and a person can make sure their bones remain strong healthy throughout.”

Anlene’s month long osteoporosis campaign focuses on the education of osteoporosis across the UAE and KSA. As part of their annual global bone scanning program, the Anlene Bone Health Check has conducted over 70,000 scans to date and is continuing with the program in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah at hypermarkets, ladies clubs, health clubs, health festivals and primary health clinics, providing the participants with a free risk assessment.

Anlene has also partnered with MBC, to run a weekly health segment over eight weeks dedicated to osteoporosis on ‘Sabah Al Kheir Ya Arab’ that takes an in-depth look into the various aspects of the disease, prevention methods and other related topics.

Registration is free and begins outside Safa Park, Gate No. 5 on Friday afternoon at 2pm and the 2km walk will start at 4pm. Every person that registers for the walk will get an opportunity to get a free bone scan which checks bone density and their risk levels of osteoporosis.
