NYU ABU DHABI INSTITUTE CONFERENCE EXAMINES IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING THE ANCIENT WORLD
|
Abu Dhabi – The New York University Abu Dhabi Institute (NYUAD Institute) will hold a two-day conference November 22-23, 2009 to investigate the role of teaching ancient history as part of a liberal arts education. Leading historians and archaeologists will come together for a series of panel discussions in Abu Dhabi to examine what it means to study this world globally by comparing regions as distant as Egypt and China, India and Europe, Mesopotamia and Central Asia. The conference will be held at Al Mamoura Auditorium and is open to the public.
The ancient period, from prehistory to about 600 CE, provides a foundation for understanding much broader developments in world history that have shaped the present. This foundation gives students a long-term, historical perspective that they are able to apply to issues in present-day society.
Registration will begin November 22 at 9:15am. The first day will kick off with a panels titled “Regional and Cultural Histories of the Ancient World” from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., followed by “Cross-Cultural and Comparative Histories of the Ancient World” from 2:30-4:50 p.m. On November 23, panels will include: “The Ancient World in the Undergraduate Curriculum” and “The Ancient World Between and Across Cultures.”
Guest lecturer Rita Wright, associate professor of anthropology at NYU, will host the final event for the conference: a special lecture titled “Mapping the Ancient World” from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
