Dubai - Over 5,000 residents from across the UAE participated in the ‘Water Bucket Walk’ organized by Dubai Cares, the UAE-based philanthropic establishment founded by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to support children with limited access to clean drinking water in schools around the world and address one of the main issues preventing children’s access to primary education.
Held on Friday, 20th November 2009 which marked the 20th anniversary of the United Nations’ Universal Children’s Day, the 3-km ‘Water Bucket Walk’ along Jumeirah Beach Road received an overwhelming response from various members of the UAE community including women and children of all ages. For a minimal registration fee of AED 30 each participant received a Dubai Cares t-shirt, bucket and a bottle of water, with all proceeds directed towards providing children in developing countries with access to clean water.
Tariq Al Gurg, CEO of Dubai Cares said, “We thank the UAE community who supported and participated in the ‘Water Bucket Walk’ in large numbers for the benefit of children in developing countries, who on an average walk six kilometers everyday to access clean water. It was amazing to witness the enthusiasm and commitment of the participants both young and old and from various ethnicities during the walk.”
Al Gurg added, “Every participant walking represents one child’s access to clean water for one year and the phenomenal response we received from the UAE community will help us improve the lives of many more children across the world.”
Kevin Sequeira, 27, an Indian national working in Dubai said, “The walk was a great community initiative and helped raise awareness about a very important issue that prevents millions of children across the world from accessing education which is every child’s birth right.”
The Dubai Cares ‘Water Bucket Walk’ was also strongly supported by the Presenting Partner Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA), our organizing partners Dubai Municipality, Dubai Police and RTA, and the sponsors; PepsiCo and The First Group, ensuring the success of the event and creating a memorable experience for all.
