Al-Futtaim Motors, the exclusive distributor for Toyota in the UAE, welcomed two intrepid explorers to the UAE who have driven over 55,000 km across challenging terrain in their two year-old Toyota Fortuner from South Africa to participate in the Haj holy ritual.
53 year-old, Ayob Yusuf Vawda and his friend, Abdool Samath Samath received a warm welcome from Farid Ahmed, Al-Futtaim Motors’ After-sales Manager, Abu Dhabi, when they stopped by on their way to their final destination in Saudi Arabia.
Ayob commented: “We have had the most amazing experience thanks to the kind hospitality and support of those we have met along the way. The journey was peppered with many heart-stopping incidents such as the road disappearing as we travelled the base of Kilimanjaro but our vehicle coped extremely well. In fact throughout the entire journey we did not break down or develop a single puncture!”
Ayob added: “Many people are surprised we were tackling harsh, difficult off-road conditions in a Toyota Fortuner and not the traditional Land Cruiser off-roader. But the vehicle proved itself time and again as we faced many difficult driving conditions.”
The adventurers left South Africa in July 2008 travelling along the east coast of Africa through Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt and then into the Middle East through Jordan and Syria and onto Turkey, Georgia and Armenia. Their travels continued through Iran, Pakistan, India and Nepal and back again before reaching Abu Dhabi.
Farid Ahmed stated: “Their Fortuner is in great condition considering the extensive journey it has undertaken. We have given the vehicle a thorough wash for the important final leg of their journey and we wish them all the best.”
