Abu Dhabi - Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) presented Certificates of Achievement at a ceremony at the Al Raha Beach Hotel yesterday evening to 145 students and supervisors who participated in ADEC’s sponsored programs abroad.

The students lived and learned in seven different countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, and the USA. The programs were developed to give high school students an opportunity for both academic and personal development over the summer months.

 “ADEC has a vision to deliver high quality education by providing an environment and opportunities for all learners to reach their fullest potential. The global community is expanding and it is important for ADEC to ensure that the future citizens of Abu Dhabi have the cultural sensitivity and awareness, as well as intellectual capacity to build international relations and supply this Emirate’s rapidly growing economy,” said H.E. Dr Mugheer Khamis Al-Khaili, ADEC’s Director General.

Certificates were presented to students and supervisors who took part in study programs that were delivered in partnership with corporations and educational organizations abroad and included the:
·         Summer Abroad Program in Australia, Canada and New Zealand;
·         Summer Camp and Study Tour sponsored by Mitsubishi Corporation and Asia Pacific University in Japan;
·         T Debate and Leadership Camp sponsored by Franks and Associates LLC in Oklahoma, USA;
·         Summer Camp and Study Tour sponsored by Lycee Louis le Grand in Paris, France; and,
·         Summer Internship Program in Dresden Germany in partnership with Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC) and AMD (of which Mubadala is a major investor).

As part of the Summer Abroad Program students attended English and IT courses while having the opportunity to practice their English conversational skills. This program directly supports one of the key initiatives of ADEC’s 10-Year Strategic Plan aimed at improving English proficiency of all students across the Emirate. This will better prepare Abu Dhabi’s young people for higher education placement and entrance into the workforce.

The Summer Abroad Program was sponsored by a generous grant from H.H. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Education Council; and was further supported by H.H. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, Vice-Chairman of ADEC.  It was first launched in 2006, with a group of 60 students and 6 chaperones taking part. In 2007 female students participated for the first time with student participation growing to 600 students and 60 chaperones this year. The total number of individuals who have benefited from the program to date is 1520.

The Summer Internship Program in Dresden, Germany provided students with specialized practical training in the manufacturing of computer chips. The ADEC sponsored initiative is designed to encourage high-achieving engineering students to develop their skills and acquire practical experience to complement their studies.

ADEC partnered with the Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC) and AMD of which Mubadala is a major investor, to place students in their company GlobalFoundries, a leading semiconductor manufacturing firm with its primary fabrication plant located in Dresden. Over the course of the internship, students learned about the basics of chip technology and manufacturing through a mixed schedule of lectures, observation, and hands on experience in the foundry.

 “The purpose of this program is to elevate the academic performance of students in Abu Dhabi, and to keep them up to date with scientific developments worldwide,” H.E Al-Khaili said. “ADEC will continue this program over the coming years to encourage university students to become an integral part the economic development plans for Abu Dhabi.”

Students provided positive feedback on all programs and said that they saw noticeable improvements in their English vocabulary and grammar and valued the cultural experience. The students and parents thanked H.H. the Crown Prince for his continuous support, and said that this experience has motivated them to achieve academic excellence so that they can contribute to the future economic and social growth of the Emirate and the UAE.

ADEC’s Head of Planning, Policy and Performance Management Dr. Masood Abdallah Badri was also presented with an award at the ceremony by H.E. Al Khaili in recognition of Dr Badri’s successful attainment of the honorable Emirates Appreciation Award for Sciences, Arts, and Literature.
