Dubai - With less than a week to go before the final round of the Middle East Rally Championship, President of the Automobile & Touring Club of the UAE and Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 31st Dubai International Rally Mohammed Ben Sulayem singled out Nasser Al Attiyah as the hot favourite given the Qatari’s excellent form in the current season.
Sulayem, who is also FIA Vice President, said: “The Dubai International Rally will round-off the rallying season for the region and Al Attiyah has this perfect opportunity to pick his fifth consecutive win in Dubai and sixth overall MERC title.”
Al Attiyah currently leads the championship having collected 40 points from four rounds against 37 points secured from five rounds by his Qatari counterpart Misfer Al Marri. Yazeed Al Rajhi of Saudi Arabia is placed third with 32 points from four rounds.
“The Dubai International Rally is crucial for me as this is the last round in the Middle East Rally calendar. The outcome will not just decide who walks away with the Dubai prize, but also the overall championship title,” Al Attiyah said, noting that the UAE is a very attractive venue for international drivers.
“Rally enthusiasts can look forward to witnessing a close chase and great action on demanding terrain, as top-class drivers compete for the ultimate prize in the region,” added Sulayem.
The last of seven rounds in this year’s FIA Middle East Championship will take place from December 3-5 under the patronage of HH Sheikh Majed Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The Dubai International Rally will start and finish amidst Downtown Burj Dubai, the world’s most prestigious square kilometre.
The 2009 Dubai International Rally, the 31st edition of the event, has garnered support from Emaar, The Address Hotels + Resorts, Emarat, Oasis and Explorer. The government support for the event comes from Dubai Ports & Dubai Customs, Dubai Police, Immigration, Road and Transport Authority, Ministry of Civil Defense. Ministry of Youth and Culture and Social Development also support the rally.
