- State-owned aluminium giant introduces innovative platform for promoting youth involvement in global issues.
Building on its existing portfolio of corporate social investment projects within the UAE school community, Dubai Aluminium Company Limited (“DUBAL”) has developed and launched an innovative concept that will add further value to the holistic education of young Emirati students at secondary school level; and ultimately benefit the community at large.
Shaikha Al Mehairi (Senior Corporate Relations & International Affairs Officer) explains: “Known as “DUBAL Clubs of Excellence”, the concept entails the establishment of individual clubs (of the same name) at five different secondary schools in Dubai. The mission (and purpose) of these clubs is to create awareness among young students on specific themes that project DUBAL’s objectives, with the themes being identified on an annual basis. For the 2009/2010 academic year, the chosen theme is the importance of protecting the environment. With this in mind, the members of each club (all students) are required to organize field trips to DUBAL; host activities in which the environment is highlighted by conducting lectures by DUBAL employees; and so forth. Each club will have four sub-sections, focusing respectively on an art competition, a writing competition, outdoor activities (clean-up campaigns, tree-planting activities and so on), and visits to (or by) DUBAL. The total budget set for this project is AED100,000.”
Ms Al Mehairi added that the project is a partnership between DUBAL and the Ministry of Education, which has provided continuous support to DUBAL with regard to the company’s educational initiatives, visits and activities over the years. A dedicated project committee, lead by DUBAL) and the Ministry of Education (lead by Dr Nadia Fawaz) chose the five participating schools after evaluating action plans submitted for the 2009/2010 academic year, namely:
- Al Sha’arawi Secondary School
- Al Ma’ahad Al Deny for Basic and Secondary Education
- Al Sufouh Secondary High School
- Sukayna Bint Al Hussain High School
- Al Ameera Haya Bint Al Hussain for Basic and Secondary Education
Representatives of the five schools attended a meeting on Sunday 22 November 2009, at which the project requirements were discussed with representatives from DUBAL and the Ministry of Education. The meeting also provided a forum for distributing AED6,000 in financial support to each school (for establishing the clubs). In addition, assurance has been given of technical support, whereby each school will receive two PCs for the establishment of the DUBAL Club of Excellence at that school.
