The Power of Adult Learning
|
Dubai – Members of the team tasked with reforming adult education in Dubai have recently travelled to Brazil to meet with international experts on lifelong learning.
The UNESCO-hosted Sixth International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA VI) in the city of Belém in Brazil . The event that takes place every 12 years provided a forum for participants to discuss ways to promote continuous learning as a remedy for global, social and developmental challenges.
Dubai was represented by Essa Al Mulla, Executive Director of National Work Force Development, Fatma Al Malek, Principal of Qurtoba Adult Education Centre in Dubai and a consultant on adult education for the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), and Fatma Al Janahi, Head of Continuous Education & Training.
The conference “Living and Learning for a Viable Future” brought together 1500 government officials, policy experts and leaders in civil society and the private sector from 156 Member States of UNESCO.
The delegation from KHDA took part in workshops and met with their peers from other countries in an effort to ensure plans for adult education in Dubai reflect the best international practices.
Essa Al Mulla, said, “We know learning is a lifelong process and not limited to childhood. The focus of this conference, continuous education, reflects KHDA’s mission to increase knowledge through all stages of life.
“The educational system we are working to create in Dubai, in coordination with the Ministry of Education, must stay flexible to meet the needs of all learners, including adults looking to acquire new skills.”
KHDA’s representatives were able to meet with experts on areas where Dubai hopes to improve its continuous education programmes, such as ways to link adult education with employment opportunities and helping people to become more productive members of society. Also, studying the potential of a tracking system in Dubai to monitor the needs and progress of students at adult learning centres and areas for quality assurance and certification.
Essa Al Mulla added: “We were able to meet with our peers from around the world, including representatives from other GCC countries, and identify ways we can work together to strengthen our adult learning services in the 13 adult education centers in Dubai with 1,200 learners and 1,421 female learners”.
Participating in such international confidence is one of the first steps that KHDA is taking to promote lifelong learning and improve adult education in Dubai in coordination with the Ministry of Education.
