Dubai - VLCC’s passion for the cause today came alive on the Jumeirah Beach Road, gathering over 450 cyclists from across the UAE to cycle to beat obesity and to promote an active way of living in the UAE.
Cycle-a-thon to fight against obesity and the ever growing list of related health issues, kick started by 9:30 am from the open beach next to Jumeirah Beach Park and concluded at the open ground, next to Dubai Municipality Building in Umm Sequim.
The event drew participants from various backgrounds, ages and residents but they all had a common objective: “to prevent obesity and support to promote the active lifestyle.”
Addressing participants prior the cycle-o-thon, Mukesh Luthra, Chairman of VLCC Group, said: “We are most delighted about the energy and enthusiasm displayed towards the Anti Obesity Drive; the turnout today is ample proof that our passion for the cause has been understood well and also supported from the residents of UAE. This is the very first and important step towards prevent this disease.”
“By organizing this first of its kind initiative not only did we propagate the active lifestyle but also made a donation to UAE’S first licensed non profit shelter for women and children victims of domestic violence, child abuse, and human trafficking,” he added.
For every participant, VLCC donated AED 30 to the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children (DFWC). Commenting on the partnership Afra Al Basti, the CEO of DFWC said: “We are happy to be able to associate with VLCC to contribute to their efforts to fight obesity. Their generosity in raising funds for our organisiation will go a long way in accomplishing our aim to provide shelter to women and children who are victims of domestic violence, abuse and human trafficking. We would like to thank VLCC on their mega endeavour and for their support towards our cause.”
Everyday cycling is an effective and enjoyable form of aerobic exercise. This is the type of exercise that is most effective at promoting good health. For example, cycling reduces the risk of serious conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity and the most common form of diabetes.
At the end of the cycle-a-thon Mukesh Luthra thanked the participants and said: “I strongly urge you all not to let the “Anti Obesity Drive” enthusiasm die as you leave here today, but rather, continue to cycle in your daily lives especially with the pleasant weather conditions we are having in the upcoming months and make obesity less visible in our society.”
