  •  65 units of blood collected at the blood donation drive.

The Dubai Health Authority’s (DHA’s) human resources (HR) section recently organised a blood donation drive at the DHA headquarters to promote employees to come forward and become regular donors.

The drive was organised in collaboration with the Al Wasl Blood Donation Centre and the centre collected 65 units of blood by the end of the day-long donation drive.

Dr Amer Ahmad Sharif, director of HR at the DHA, emphasized on the importance of holding such blood donation drives to cater to Dubai’s ever-increasing demand for blood.

Dr Sharif was the first one to donate blood and kick-start the donation drive.

He encouraged the blood donation centre to organise such mobile blood donation drives in work places so that it becomes convenient for people to donate blood. “Donating blood does not take more than half an hour and it is a noble deed because it saves lives,” he said.

Dr Rena Saheb, head of the medical unit at Al Wasl Blood Donation Centre said that the centre categorises the whole blood collected into four different parts - red blood cells, plasma, platelets and cryoprecipitate (CPP) and each part has a specific medical purpose.

For example red blood cells are used for thalassemic patients, plasma is used for patients who have burns, platelet are used to treat leukaemia, platelets are also used in heart surgeries and CPP is used to manage bleeding disorders.

“Therefore one unit of blood that a person donates can is used in four different ways to cure people,” said Dr Saheb.

She also encouraged employees to register themselves with the centre so that when a particular blood type is required the centre can refer to their database and contact donors.

She said updating and maintaining a strong database is essential, as every unit of blood donated can be used only up to a certain period of time, before it expires.

The Al Wasl Blood Donation Centre caters to the blood requirements for the Emirate of Dubai including DHA and private hospitals.

The organisers of the DHA blood donation drive from the HR section are Amani Essa Al Rowaished, Mohammed Badwawi, Abbas Mottabi and Amina Abduallah.
