Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) today announced the appointment of industry veteran Tahir Jamal Qadir as the Lead Responsible Care Coordinator for the Association.
The appointment follows the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between GPCA and the American Chemistry Council (ACC) to establish a Responsible Care® program for the region’s petrochemical and chemical industry. The MoU marks a major step forward in implementing GPCA’s ambitious plans to ensure that the regional industry adopts uniform world-class Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) practices.
The Responsible Care ethic is the petrochemicals industry’s foundation for a sustainable future. Launched in Canada more than 20 years ago, it covers all aspects of chemical industry activity: process safety, pollution prevention, distribution safety, product stewardship, security, community awareness and emergency response. It is the global chemical industry’s signature initiative to enhance EHS performance within chemical facilities and along their supply chains. Participating national or regional trade associations agree to conform to the Responsible Care Global Charter and the Responsible Care Fundamental Features instituted by the International Council of Chemical Association (ICCA).
Commenting on this appointment, Dr. Abdulwahab Al-Sadoun, GPCA Secretary General, said, “With Tahir’s appointment and the signing of the MOU, GPCA is aiming to develop its Responsible Care Program over the next year to obtain ICCA recognition in 2010. The Association now has a dedicated Responsible Care Committee, led by Abdulaziz Al Hajiri, CEO of Borouge, to help implement the MOU and work closely with ACC and GPCA member companies.”
Tahir Qadir, who is moving to this new role from SABTANK (SABIC Terminal Services Company), a subsidiary of SABIC, will play a key role in executing the MoU and associated programs that will help implement Responsible Care across the industry in the Gulf. He has over 27 years of experience in the petrochemicals and chemical industry and has worked in the areas of Operations, Process, Projects, and Planning. Over the last 12 years he has worked in the areas of management systems including Quality, Environment, Health, Safety, Security and risk-based audits. He has led a number of initiatives including the development and implementation of a fully integrated management system and, most recently, the establishment of a certified Responsible Care Management System at SABIC Terminal Services. Prior to joining SABIC, he worked as Operation Manager with Hoechst-Celanese group. Tahir Qadir has a B.Sc. degree in Chemical Engineering.
The appointment reinforces GPCA’s commitment to the timely launch and success of the initiative in the Gulf region. The MoU was signed on the concluding day of the Fourth Annual GPCA Forum, which was held at the Intercontinental Dubai Festival City from December 8-10, 2009. The MoU was signed by Mr. Mohamed H. Al-Mady, Chairman, GPCA and Vice Chairman & CEO - SABIC, Dr. Abdulwahab Al-Sadoun, Secretary General of GPCA, Stephen D. Pryor, Director, American Chemistry Council, and President, ExxonMobil Chemical Company and Cal Dooley, President and CEO of the ACC.
GPCA says it wants to ensure that the regional industry achieves the goal defined by the UN’s Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM): “Chemicals are used and produced in ways that lead to the minimization of significant adverse effects on human health and the environment.”
