ADNOC & its Group of Companies implement a Comprehensive Air Quality System
|
People, Environment, Asset and Reputation Protection are explicit elements of ADNOC’s Statement of Commitment and a requirement of ADNOC corporate HSE policy.
To ensure that environmental policies, objectives and targets are achieved and that procedures for continual environmental improvement are implemented, a need to measure air quality on a regular basis has been determined by ADNOC and decided to establish a comprehensive Air Quality Monitoring and Management System (AQMS) covering all of the Group’s oil & gas operation sites.
According to a statement issued by ADNOC and its Group of Companies at the World Future Energy Summit (WFES 2010) which concluded at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Centre (ADNEC) yesterday, the objective of the AQMS is to give ADNOC & its Group of Companies a state of the art management system to describe ambient air quality around and contributions from their onshore and offshore oil & gas facilities in the Emirate.
The implementation of the AQMS has been divided between ADNOC and each individual affected Company which will install the required air emissions monitoring systems within its own facilities, whereas ADNOC will set up the ambient air quality monitoring stations network and database platforms besides communication network at ADNOC HQ and the Group HQ offices. The Ambient Air Quality and Meteorological network consist of a mobile station (truck) and seven fixed stations located in the following areas: Sas Nakhl, Bab, Asab, Ruwais Housing, Zirku Island, Mubaraz Island, and Das Island. The installation and operation of the emission monitoring systems is coordinated on company level with distributed data collection systems (DCS) at each site and stored at their site data acquisition systems (SDAS). Each company will have one central database at their HQ providing data access to their individual sites to upload emission parameters from their SDAS. The Group HQ’s centralized data will be transferred to the ADNOC HQ central database on demand through a wide area network (WAN).
In establishing this comprehensive Air Quality Monitoring & Management System ADNOC is able to publish an Air Quality Index (AQI) on a monthly basis, which is a measure of overall air quality. The AQI is defined as a number determining how clean or polluted the air is at a particular time in a particular area and the effects of health associated with it. ADNOC will also manage to compare actual ambient air quality with air quality objectives, locally and regionally. The Air Quality Monitoring & Management System enabled ADNOC to provide an information and simulation tool to develop and implement an air quality management program, forecast potential changes in air quality resulting from proposed business development projects and to develop abatement strategies, if required, in an efficient and cost-effective manner. ADNOC will have, thanks to AQMS, a historical database of air quality in order to document the air quality changes in the region.
