  • Mobile broadband to account for a significant portion of the telecommunications industry's growth beyond voice communications

Huawei, a leader in providing next-generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, forecasted that the rise of mobile broadband is expected to increase in subscribers to two billion by 2014 worldwide. At that time, 80 percent of all broadband users are expected to be mobile subscribers, 1.5 billion of whom will be new to the service.

Revenue for voice services has been gradually declining with the development of mobile communications in the past decade. In the past five years, the revenue for fixed voice services decreased by 15 percent, reflected by a decreasing growth rate for mobile voice services in 2009.

“As operators shift their focus away from voice communications and towards mobile broadband services, they will tackle the challenge of booming mobile broadband flow while effectively managing costs, and capture the momentum of the growing smart terminals segment,” said Ihab Ghattas, Assistant President of Huawei in the Middle East.

Underpinned by a recently matured industry chain, mobile broadband development has globally shifted up a gear. The number of mobile broadband subscribers globally is expected to increase in the first half of the decade, reaching two billion by 2014.

“As it continues to gain popularity, I believe that the window of opportunity to benefit from mobile broadband is far more prominent in this region, especially when compared to the already saturated markets in Europe and North America," Ghattas explained. Estimates from Pyramid Research have predicted faster than average growth for the Middle East over the next 5 years.

“A wide variety of intelligent terminals and high speed data cards are available, diverse web applications and new Internet content are constantly hitting the market, and operators are setting pricing strategies to maximally penetrate market segments, all greatly enriching and expanding the services and applications for mobile broadband,” concluded Ghattas.
