One of the world’s leading authorities on energy is attending the Middle East Electricity Exhibition in Dubai this week. Dr. Robert Hawley, former Chief Executive of British Energy Plc and Nuclear Electric Plc, will also present a seminar on, “Future Trends In Electricity Generation Across The Globe” at the Middle East Electricity Exhibition on Wednesday, February 10.

The presence of Dr. Hawley, now Chairman of Lister Petter, a British company with a long history in the UAE, is seen by many in the industry as underpinning the global stature of the exhibition and underlines the growing importance of the UAE’s position in the global energy sector.

Now in its 35th year, Middle East Electricity is one the largest and most important international gatherings of companies and professionals operating in the power generation, lighting, water, new & renewable and nuclear energy industries. Speaking ahead of the event, Lister Petter’s Chairman said he was delighted to be attending - “Lister Petter has been conducting development work at their HQ in Dubai’s Silicon Oasis in an effort to provide a real contribution to the UAE Government’s strategy to increase the efficiency of energy consumption.”

“I am delighted to be attending Middle East Electricity which is the perfect showcase for us to display not only our latest engine models but more importantly our sector leading hybrid systems. A 140 year old innovator of power solutions, we have become a leading name in the Middle East for clean, rugged and reliable products and as such are now focusing on ‘energy waste’ from our HQ at Dubai Silicon Oasis,” said Dr. Hawley.

At Middle East Electricity 2008, Lister Petter launched its mechanically governed fully EPA emissions compliant engines and this year will be promoting its Hybrid Solutions focusing on Energy Saving. “This is particularly relevant in areas where diesel and gas rather than mains electricity are used to provide short and medium term power solutions,” said Lister-Petter CEO Bryan Draper. “Enormous sums of money are being poured into metering electricity consumption, but little thought has gone into the massive stand alone power industry and this is where Lister Petter feels that it can contribute - a typical generator set runs at a fixed speed generating a specific level of power. This has to be set at the maximum level required by the application. As a result when the generator is run consistently there is an immediate power wastage which is never utilised and lost.”

On this basis, Etisalat and Du could save in excess of 2 million gallons of diesel fuel per annum each, not to mention the cost of equipment depreciation and servicing. Apply this across the GCC, where despite the global recession construction continues at a high rate, although the waste level where a hybrid solution becomes viable is as low as 15%, the construction sector has an average waste of 30% and in telecoms up to 75%.

“We are taking the UAE Government’s stated intention to move immediately to a more reliable and energy efficient system seriously and believe that in the construction industry alone, energy savings could be considerable and if applied would make the UAE a world leader in best practice in energy conservation,” added Draper.

Free to enter for industry professionals, Middle East Electricity 2010, a comprehensive showcase for the global and regional power generation, water, lighting, nuclear and new and renewable energy sectors, runs from Tuesday 9th to Thursday 11th February at Dubai International Exhibition Centre.
