Licensing Agency at Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) had issued 167,261 driving licenses in Dubai during last year 2009.
According to Sultan Abdullah Al Marzooki, Director of Driving Licensing Dep’t at RTA Licensing Agency, the driving licenses issued included 7 categories; namely motorcycle, light vehicle, heavy vehicle, light bus, heavy bus, light mechanical plant, and heavy mechanical plant.
Light vehicles topped the list of licenses issued with 131,690 driving licenses, followed by heavy vehicles (15,473 driving licenses), heavy mechanical plant (7,125 driving licenses), heavy bus (6,989 driving licenses), motorcycle (3,357 driving licenses), light mechanical plant (1,875 driving licenses), and the list was trailed by light bus with 751 driving licenses issued under this category.
“These statistics clearly indicate that the number of applications is on the rise and so are the clearance rates of tested drivers compared to what we had in the past. This increase is attributed to the rise in the number of examiners to cover the rising numbers of examinees on the one hand and to give them ample testing time on the other. It is also dictated by the change in the test result paper where both the primary and secondary errors were inserted. Moreover, examiners have also been subjected to several training courses approved at the highest international specifications and criteria in this regard, and the fact that there is a better harmony between the test and the training syllabuses at the driving institutes” elaborated Al Marzooki.
He maintained that examiners had been trained on the best principles and technical standards worldwide in the field of testing. “Examiners have been issued with competency certificates and qualified with the aim of promoting their sensible and conceptual understanding of tests through holding workshops to educate them on the basics of the profession and methods of dealing with examinees. Distinguished examiners were honoured and awarded with certificates of thanks, besides material incentives” continued Al Marzooki.
He pointed out that the Dep’t had sought to upgrade work mechanism through splitting the working hours of examiners such that each examiner would examine a specific number each hour. “This mechanism alleviates the psychological & physical pressure on the examiner as he or she will be in a position of to better plan daily schedule, meanwhile the examinee will also benefit in the fixing of appointments” commented Al Marzooki.
The Director of Driving Licensing Dep’t at RTA Licensing Agency added that work is progressing in developing software for electronic programming of testing appointments which will be implemented during this year. “Under the new system, the examinee will be able to obtain the testing appointment through multiple channels such as the e-services, contact the Call Center, or visit one of the centers to obtain a specific and accurate appointment.
