The right hat is the key to looking stunning at this year’s revamped Dubai World Cup, according to a designer who travels the world making hats for top social events.
As part of Wafi’s collection for the races, milliner Shai Tabassi is displaying and producing her original creations at The Designer Club throughout the month of March and is sharing her tips for buying the perfect hat for the big day.
The premier event on Dubai’s racing calendar will be held on Saturday 27th March and, with this year’s new venue certain to attract huge media interest, ladies will be looking to make a big impression. With the chance of appearing in society magazines and possibly even scooping the best dressed prizes, the finest hats will be in high demand.
Tabassi explains why hats are so important: “Hats make a very strong statement and are the final touch to anyone’s attire. For top social occasions, hats are an investment that needs to be made and the hat you wear says a lot about you. There are different styles of hats for different outfits, such as a formal suit or a dress. Personality, social status and the type of occasion should all have an impact on the style of hat chosen,” she says.
Shai Tabassi has been making hats since she was 14 years old and is known around the world for her unique creations. Tabassi usually works from her studio in Melbourne, where she makes hats for private clientele and elite boutiques. She regularly makes hats for other important racing events, including the Melbourne Cup and Singapore Gold Cup.
Shai first showcased her collection at the Designer Club in 2001 when she began creating hats for the Dubai World Cup. This year Shai’s hats are again on display in Wafi and she can be consulted in the store, where she is also available to tailor-make a unique hat if time permits. There are also some ideas for gentlemen who also want to get ahead in the style stakes at this year’s races.
Tabassi follows trends but still links them to modernity: “My style has been described as post modern or, in other words, classic with a twist which takes it away from conventionality. The most important fact about my designs is that they are all unique, so there’s no chance of bumping into the same hat on the important day.”
Shai Tabassi also shares some insider tips for women looking for the perfect World Cup hat. She says: “Visit a professional milliner and seek advice for the best style that suits your look, personality and social status. You should also ensure it complements your outfit and other fashion accessories. However, hats don’t need to match the colour of the outfit. A contrasting colour for the hat can look spectacular and can often make the hat become a statement on its own rather than an extension of the outfit.”
The Designer Club at Wafi is a complete fashion gallery and provides styles for special occasions for a sophisticated clientele, as well as catering to career ladies and the younger generation, with trendy daywear. The designer St. John, a favourite of Angelina Jolie, is also featured in the store.
Shai can be consulted at Wafi throughout the month of March to offer an inspirational look for the social event of the year.
With over 350 stores Wafi is the 2008 winner of Best Shopping Mall, Best Restaurant, Best New Hotel, Best Spa and Best Independent Boutique and boasts one of Dubai’s largest souks, world-class shopping and fine dining in the heart of Dubai.
