Dubai airport to Deira — the shortest transfer in the city
Dubai International to Deira: the Red Line and the Green Line interchange, taxi costs, and why this is the easiest arrival in Dubai.
- Metro
- ~10–15 min, a few AED
- Taxi
- ~10–15 min, ~AED 30–45
- Interchange
- Union
- Distance
- ~5 km
Deira is the closest visitor district to Dubai International, and this is the shortest and cheapest airport transfer in the city. The airport sits on the edge of the old commercial district, so a taxi is around ten to fifteen minutes and the metro barely longer.
For anyone staying in Deira or on the Bur Dubai side, this is one of the practical advantages of the district that rarely appears in the marketing: you are ten minutes from your flight.
The options, compared
Deira is roughly five kilometres from the terminals, the shortest transfer of any visitor district.
| Option | Time | Cost | Changes | Luggage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red Line to Union Then Green Line or walk | 10–15 min | A few AED | None or one | Size limits |
| Taxi Direct from the rank | 10–15 min | AED 30–45 | None | Any |
| Ride-hailing app Designated pickup | 10–15 min | Slightly more | None | Any |
The metro route
Red Line from Terminal 1 or 3 to Union, which is two or three stops and about ten minutes. Union is the interchange with the Green Line, which serves the rest of Deira, Al Ras is the station for the Gold Souk and the abra stations.
For many Deira hotels, Union or Baniyas Square is close enough to walk from. For the souk end of the district, take the Green Line one or two stops further.
The taxi
Ten to fifteen minutes and AED 30 to 45, which includes the higher airport starting fare of around AED 25. It is the cheapest airport taxi in the city by a wide margin simply because the distance is short.
For a late arrival or with luggage, the small premium over the metro is easy to justify here in a way it is not for the Marina.
Why this matters when choosing a district
Two transfers a trip, at ten minutes each, against forty minutes each to the Marina or the Palm. On a short stay that difference is a meaningful share of the trip, and it is rarely part of the calculation when people compare hotel rates.
Combined with rates from around AED 150 and two metro lines, it is a large part of why Deira and Bur Dubai are better value than the headline price suggests.
Arriving late
The metro runs from early morning until around midnight, later at weekends. For a flight landing after that (and many long-haul arrivals do) a taxi is the only option, and from the airport to Deira it is cheap enough that this is not a problem.
Deira hotels are used to late arrivals and most have staffed reception around the clock.
What to sort out on arrival
Buy the Nol card at the airport station even if you are taking a taxi in, because you will want it for the metro during the stay. Take cash: Deira is the one district where the souks, the abra and the cafeterias genuinely expect it and card acceptance is inconsistent.
A tourist SIM or eSIM is worth arranging before leaving the terminal.
The walk at the Deira end
The metro gets you into the district quickly and then leaves you with the hardest part of the journey, which is the last few hundred metres. Deira hotels are scattered through a dense grid of streets rather than clustered around the stations, and the gap between a station exit and a hotel door is routinely a ten-minute walk.
In November that is pleasant. In July, with two suitcases, it is the worst part of the trip, and it is why visitors who did the arithmetic on the fare arrive regretting it. The saving over a taxi is real but small in absolute terms, and it is spent entirely on that walk.
The workable version is to check where your hotel actually sits before deciding. Union, Baniyas Square, Al Rigga and Salah Al Din each serve a different pocket of the district, and a hotel two minutes from one of them is a genuinely easy metro arrival. A hotel in the middle of the block between two stations is not, whatever the map distance says.
A middle option that residents use: metro to the nearest station and a short taxi from there. It costs a fraction of the full airport fare and removes the part that hurts.
Whatever you choose, do it with the hotel address written in Arabic as well as English. Deira street names and building names are used interchangeably here, and a driver reading the Arabic gets there faster.
Check the station against the hotel address before deciding anything.
