Dubai airport to Downtown — the Red Line runs there directly

Getting from Dubai International to Downtown: the Red Line from Terminal 1 or 3, the taxi alternative, journey times and what each actually costs.

Metro
~20 min, a few AED
Taxi
~20 min, ~AED 55–70
From T2
Taxi only
Needs
Nol card for metro

This is the easiest airport transfer in Dubai and the one where public transport genuinely competes with a taxi. The Red Line runs from both Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 directly to Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall, which is Downtown's station, in about twenty minutes for a few dirhams.

A taxi covers the same distance in roughly the same time outside rush hour and costs perhaps fifteen times as much. The metro's only real drawbacks are luggage limits and the covered walk at the far end.

The options, compared

Times are outside peak. Rush hour affects the taxi and not the train.

Taking the metro

Terminals 1 and 3 each have their own Red Line station inside the building, reached from arrivals without going outside. Buy a Nol card at the station. You cannot pay any other way, and there is no cash or contactless option at the gates. Tap in, tap out, and the zone fare comes to a few dirhams.

Get off at Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall. From the platform it is a covered walk of roughly ten minutes to the mall and rather more to a specific hotel, so the door-to-door time is longer than the twenty-minute journey suggests.

There are luggage size limits on the metro and they are enforced at busy times. For one cabin bag each it is straightforward; for two large cases it is not the right choice.

Taking a taxi

Metered taxis queue outside every terminal. The airport rank carries a higher starting fare than a street taxi (around AED 25 against roughly AED 12) and the run to Downtown typically totals AED 55 to 70 depending on traffic and exactly where you are going.

Outside rush hour it is about twenty minutes. Inside it, the same trip can take forty-five, which is the one scenario where the metro wins outright on time as well as cost.

Terminal 2 is different

Terminal 2, which handles flydubai and several regional carriers, has no metro station. From there a taxi is effectively the only sensible option, and it is a slightly longer run to Downtown than from Terminals 1 and 3.

This catches out visitors who researched the metro route and then landed at a terminal it does not serve.

What to do before leaving the terminal

Buy the Nol card if you intend to use the metro at all during the trip, not just for this journey. It is the only way to pay for the metro and tram, and buying it at the airport saves doing it later. Pick up a tourist SIM or activate an eSIM. Take some cash for the souks and the abra even though cards work almost everywhere else.

Currency desks and ATMs are in the arrivals halls, and the ATMs generally give the better rate.

Which to choose

Metro if you are travelling light, arriving in daylight, and staying near the station. Taxi if you have large luggage, are arriving late, are travelling with small children, or your hotel is a walk from Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall, which many Downtown and Business Bay hotels are.

The honest summary: the metro is dramatically cheaper and about as fast, and the taxi is dramatically easier.

Arriving in the middle of the night

The metro does not run around the clock, and a substantial share of long-haul arrivals land in the window when it is closed. The last trains leave well before the small hours and the first are not early enough to help a three in the morning arrival, which makes a taxi the only realistic option for a large number of flights.

The taxi rank operates continuously and is orderly at any hour, with a supervised queue outside each terminal. There is no night surcharge worth worrying about on a metered fare, and the roads at that hour are empty, so the journey is faster than the daytime estimate rather than slower.

The thing worth doing in advance is confirming that the hotel has a staffed desk at the hour you will arrive. Smaller properties in the cheaper districts do not always, and discovering that at four in the morning is a considerably bigger problem than the fare was.

Both options work well. The luggage and the hour decide it, not the fare.
